Please Share: The words that stick

2511So we’ve discussed how sensitivity can be sinful and we need to pray past it. It doesn’t change the reality that words hold weight. The Bible says this is true:

So also the tongue is a small member, yet it boasts of great things. How great a forest is set ablaze by such a small fire! And the tongue is a fire, a world of unrighteousness. The tongue is set among our members, staining the whole body, setting on fire the entire course of life, and set on fire by hell. (James 3:5-6, ESV)

1821My curiosity wants to ask you about the worst thing someone has said to you in your affliction. But we all know if we go down that road, we’ll just dig a pit of bitterness and anger to wallow in. So instead, I want you to share the best thing someone has said to you. Depending on your story and/or your heart attitude, this may take some thinking. Proverbs 16:24 says, “Gracious words are like a honeycomb, sweetness to the soul and health to the body.” They may spread your encouragement to others; it’s also a good practice to dwell on the things that produce joy in you, and not the opposite.

One thing that comes to mind for me is when we were talking about our trial, early on in it, with some friends who had once had a still birth. I just remember them saying, “It’s hard to say anything that will make you feel better, but we are so sorry you have to go through this. We know it really sucks.” That was so much more meaningful to me at that time than any advice they could’ve given. It’s so simple, but we knew they knew how we felt and it touched us to have someone say that.

So what about you? What is the best thing someone has said to you in your infertility?

  1. The most encouraging words I’ve ever received in my infertility actually came this Tuesday. I got an email from a sweet friend who has struggled with infertility for many years. She shared Luke 1:5-6: “In the days of Herod, king of Judea, there was a priest named Zechariah, of the division of Abijah. And he had a wife from the daughters of Aaron, and her name was Elizabeth. And they were both righteous before God, walking blamelessly in all the commandments and statutes of the Lord. But they had no children, because Elizabeth was barren, and both were advanced in years.” Infertility is not a curse from God. Even though it feels like it at times. It is not a punishment. I can be righteous and pleasing to God and still struggle with infertility. While that doesn’t take away the pain, it was such a good reminder of truth!

      1. Sorry half of my comment ended up in bold! The mobile app can be weird sometimes. 🙂 Glad it was encouraging to you! I’ve been meditating on that truth for the past week, and I’m so thankful for fellow believers who provide encouragement in truth on the journey. Praying for you!
